The heat of Texas in August is legendary, and so are the Wildflower 3.0 18+ Women’s Tennis Team, fondly named "Sugar and Slice". Their journey to Corpus Christi’s 'Little State' Tournament is a testament to their tenacity, team spirit, and relentless passion for the game.

Beginning as a competitive entrant in a six-week long local league involving four challenging teams, "Sugar and Slice" secured their spot in Corpus by clinching the second place. Under the seasoned leadership of their veteran captain, Lara Miller, the team demonstrated that tennis is as much about strategy and skill as it is about heart.

CORPUS CHRISTI - AUG 11-13

Their tournament kick-started on Friday, August 11th, against San Antonio. A close match saw the team face a 1-4 setback. Later the same day, they took on Austin, showcasing their prowess, even in defeat, with a score of 2-3. Standout performances came from Kyrbie White and Shannon Kruppa at #2 doubles with a commanding score of 6-1, 6-3. Diana Coggin and Ayse Clark mirrored this dominance, sealing their win at #3 doubles with an impressive 6-0, 6-1.

Saturday, August 12th, tested the team's resilience. The day started with a face-off against San Antonio, followed by a nail-biting match against a team from Corpus Christi. While the scoreboard read 2-3 in favor of Corpus Christi, "Sugar and Slice" gave their opponents a run for their money.

Lara Miller and Lauren Ratcliff fought valiantly, clinching a win at Line #1 doubles after a thrilling 3rd set tie break. Not to be outdone, Kyrbie White and Heather Naumann clinched victory at line #2 doubles with an assertive 6-0, 6-3.

However, it was Sunday that truly defined the spirit of "Sugar and Slice".

Battling against Valley and sweltering temperatures soaring over 100 degrees, the team pulled out all stops. The end result? A phenomenal 4-1 win! Susan Glanzman, at #2 Singles, made her mark with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph. The doubles were an edge-of-the-seat affair. Kyrbie White and Shannon Kruppa, Diana Coggin and Ayse Clark, and the duo of Lara Miller and Jackie Morgan, all won their respective lines, each with thrilling 3rd set tie breakers.

Securing a respectable 5th place amidst challenging conditions, "Sugar and Slice" have shown they're more than just a name. They embody the spirit of tennis – a mix of skill, strategy, determination, and passion.

As they returned from Corpus Christi, they didn’t just bring back scores; they brought back experience, memories, and a resolve to return stronger.

While tournaments come and go, the lessons learned and the bonds formed last a lifetime. To Lara Miller and her fantastic team: Here's to many more games, many more wins, and an everlasting spirit of camaraderie!

Onwards and upwards, "Sugar and Slice"! 🎾🌟
